UB40 - “KING”.

February 13, 1980 - UB40 make their debut with a single on the Midlands indie label Graduate Records. It’s the Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired”King”backed with “Food For Thought.”

The NME’s Roy Carr wasn’t all that taken with it. “The rhythm track may well be born-again soft centered Black Country reggae, but the melodies and treatments (especially on”Food For Thought”) sound like those irritatingly haunting themes featured in countless mid-60s
continental Riviera romance youth movies. Actually,Blondie has already plundered the genre to perfection with “Atomic.” Despite the dour review, the single does very well for the new band, taking them onto Top Of The Pops with the#4 song in England.
